Cool off with a Lemonade Shandy

Posted by TOSSWARE Team on

Lemonade stands aren’t just for kids anymore! Bring the whole family together by mixing up some fresh lemonade for the kids alongside a couple lemon shandies for the adults. The shandy is a classic summer drink that mixes lemonade, ginger ale, or a carbonated beverage with beer. The best shandies are made with the highest quality ingredients so homemade lemonade is the way to go. Try out this recipe for the perfect slightly tart, slightly sweet lemonade.

While it only has three ingredients, lemonade can be a tricky beast. Too much lemon juice quickly turns it sour, too much sugar turns it into unpalatable syrup, and too much water can kill the flavor. A good rule of thumb to avoid these commonplace lemonade pitfalls is to stick to one part lemon juice, one part sugar, and five parts water. Early season lemons, starting in May, will be more sour and call for a slightly higher ratio of sugar to lemon juice. Later season lemons harvested in September and October will be a little sweeter, bringing down the need for sugar a bit.

TOSSWARE’s secret to the perfect lemonade is to add just one more ingredient: a dash of salt. The salt cuts just a bit of the acidity of the lemons, bringing out their best flavor.  Try the following recipe with mid-season, local lemons for best lemonade!

TOSSWARE’s Perfect Homemade Lemonade

Makes 64 ounces of lemonade

10 Lemons (squeezed to 1 ½ cups lemon juice)
8 Cups of fresh filtered water
1 ½ cups sugar
1 Teaspoon Lemon zest
¼ teaspoon of salt

1. Start by making a lemon simple syrup by mixing together 1 ½ cups of sugar, 1 ½ cups of water, and 1 teaspoon of lemon zest in a small pot over low heat.

2. Gently stir the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved (about 2 minutes) and remove from heat.

3. Let the simple syrup cool.

4. In a pitcher stir together 1 ½ cups lemon juice, 6 ½ cups water, simple syrup, and salt.

5. Serve and enjoy. Be sure to save some lemonade for shandies!

TOSSWARE's Refreshing Shandy

18 oz Pilsner or other light beer
18 oz fresh, homemade lemonade

  2. Slowly fill the glasses the rest of the way with lemonade.
  3. Garnish with a fresh lemon wedge.

For those stout and porter lovers out there, don’t give up on the refreshing dream of a shandy. Darker beers are occasionally used to make a similar drink, the playfully named dandy shandy. We recommend bringing back the classic shandygaff addition of ginger when it comes to dark beers. The ginger adds a small kick that rounds out a dandy shandy.
